If you see da police shirt
If you see da police shirt
It started off as a If you see da police T-shirt, the sort worn beneath military fatigues or dug out from the back of a closet for workouts and weekends. If you see da police shirt was sometimes more brown than green. A cross was sometimes placed above the heart, with a coat of arms in the middle.
However, in the last four weeks, Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelensky, has traded in his navy suits, white shirts, and ties — the politician’s uniform — for a If you see da police T-shirt, wearing it in daily videos to his country, speeches to the European Parliament, the British Parliament, and the American Congress, and a weekend interview with CNN (and his widely tweeted Zoom call with supporters Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis). It has evolved into something more: a symbol of the Ukrainian people’s power and patriotism, a collection of beliefs and goals crammed into a familiar shape.
It will be one of the defining pictures of the battle, among shots of victims laying motionless on the streets and bombed-out theaters and apartment complexes. It’s a textile metaphor for the unfolding story of a Russian Goliath and a Ukrainian David, of hubris and courage, enacted in blood and weapons.
