Where Did Zo Kravitz Get Her Exceptional Fashion Sense? Who Else But Her Mother?
We may ooh and ahh over celebrity red carpet photographs, but we seldom say, “Wow, they have such terrific style.” Yes, they seem gorgeous, but with all the huge outfits and enormous hairdo, their fashion sense is lost in translation.
Of course, there are exceptions: ladies who, whether they’ve just stepped off a plane or arrived at the Vanity Fair Oscars party, always look like themselves, with their own flair shining brightly. Enter Lisa Bonet, an actress whose outfit is ready for a makeover.
Bonet turned 53 years old earlier this month. Her daughter, Zo Kravitz, marked the occasion on Instagram with an old baby picture and the caption,’she don’t have instagram coz she’s cooler than any of us.’ ‘Happy birthday, #mom, twin.’
Bonet is the actress whose no-fuss glamour, along with her free-spirited off-duty style, is a far cry from the starlets attempting to carve out ‘a look’ in the era of social media.
Let’s go back to 1987. Bonet donned circular spectacles, a tasseled black bra, and a leather jacket that dropped off her shoulders to the MTV Video Music Awards. Although red carpets were less formal in the 1980s and 1990s, with celebrities often arriving in cardigans and jeans rather than ball gowns, Bonet stood out as appearing effortlessly stylish – as if she’d simply rummaged through her closet rather than agonizing over dresses for hours.
She wore a blossom-print dress, a fringed knit waistcoat (which she wore over an olive-colored boilersuit in 2014), and a leather cord necklace to the Earth Communication Conference in Malibu in June 1990. It was the ideal mix of girl next door meets hippie, and a long cry from the cult of simplicity that would eventually define the decade.
Bonet made an appearance at the premiere of High Fidelity in 2000, a film that has since been recreated for television with her daughter in the starring role.
Bonet wore a crushed velvet kimono, which has become a trademark piece, as well as a sheer cheongsam-style dress, chocolate cowboy boots, and a beaded handbag. It would have looked like an ill-advised dip into a fancy dress box on anybody else. It was red carpet gold on Bonet, with her smeared silver makeup.
Although recent styles are more’red carpet’ in nature, they are nevertheless delivered with a twist. Bonet donned a charcoal-colored velvet gown to the Games of Thrones premiere in Los Angeles, with a ruby stone dangling from her septum piercing and a gold crescent moon topping her half-up, half-down ‘do. Hair accessories seem to be a popular choice for style.
For the 2015 Met Gala, she slipped a gold-and-blue fan into her hairdo and must be the only lady on the globe who can pull off a top hat.
When Lisa Bonet and Zoe Kravitz appear together, it’s always a fruitful fashion moment. They came in a symphony of black at the 2018 Vanity Fair Oscars party, Kravitz in a puffball dress that erupted into feathers and Bonet in a smocked and sheer-sleeved gown.
With their remarkable array of arm tattoos (snakes, arrows, symbols, you name it), they showed they were the coolest mother-daughter combo at the InStyle Awards in 2013.
A robe is a good place to start if you want to appear as stylish as Bonet. Last year, she wore an amethyst-colored kimono over a pleated black dress to her daughter’s wedding, and the result was pure boho brilliance.
